About This Site
I moved to Union City a few years ago with two kids, a full-time job and no idea where anything was.
Everything had to be found from scratch. A pediatrician, a dentist the kids wouldn't fight me about, the bus that actually gets to school on time. Somewhere near the bottom of that list came someone for my own skin, and it took me far longer than it should have. How many visits is "a series," really. Can I do it on a Friday. Will I look normal at Monday drop-off.
I kept the answers in a note on my phone, typed on a bench outside school with ten minutes to spare. Other parents started asking to see it. Eventually the note got long enough that it seemed worth typing up properly. That's this site. There was no dramatic bad outcome behind it. Just a lot of short waits and a calendar that never has a free morning.
The rules I write by
The word gets explained before the treatment does. Half of what goes wrong in these appointments is vocabulary, not medicine. Units, syringes, series, touch-up, downtime. I define them in plain terms every time, even when it slows a page down.
Mechanism before instruction. If I tell you to avoid something, I'll tell you why. Rules you understand survive a busy week. Rules you don't get quietly dropped on day three.
Nothing invented. No prices, no statistics I can't stand behind, no practitioners described as good or bad, no before-and-after folder. When something is uncertain, the page says it's uncertain, and there's more of that here than is comfortable.
No promises about your face. Nobody writing at a keyboard can tell you what a treatment will do to you. I'll give you ranges, timelines, and the questions that make somebody qualified give you a straight answer.
Written to be read out loud. A lot of readers here are doing this in their second language, or doing it on behalf of a parent who is. If a sentence only works on a screen, I've written it badly.
Who's actually behind this
Just me, using the site name because it fits a browser tab better than mine. My background is ordinary: a day job, two kids, and a family calendar that gets rebuilt every Sunday night. No clinic behind me either, no money changes hands over what gets covered here, and I don't publish rankings.
That limit is real and I'd rather name it than paper over it. Reading manufacturer inserts and clinical papers carefully is within my range. Looking at your skin is not, so please treat everything here as a parent's homework rather than medical advice, and let someone who can examine you in person make the call. My job stops at the vocabulary and the scheduling, so the appointment becomes a conversation rather than a form you nod your way through.
Why it's written from up here
Union City sits on top of the Palisades, and the geography does more to the advice on this site than anything else does.
Hardly anyone is picking from one market. People go where the bus was already taking them, or where a cousin went, or over into Hoboken because the appointment time was better and the ride is short. The options are spread across several towns and the deciding factor is usually the commute, not the menu.
It also means the businesses involved are small independent operations, mostly, along Bergenline and the avenues either side of it. Union City, NJ News is on my phone because the turnover along those blocks is quick and a directory goes stale faster than the reporting does. It's the honest picture of what's here this month. It tells you nothing at all about whose hands you'd want near your face.
A fair number of readers are students and staff at campuses like Hudson County Community College and Stevens Institute of Technology, working on tight budgets and tighter calendars. A lot of the scheduling thinking on this site started with their questions, and it's better for it.
Take one page with you
Pick the page that matches the thing you're worried about. Read it once. Write down the two sentences you didn't follow, in whatever language you think in, and take that piece of paper into the room.
Then ask. Ask the second question, the one that feels like it's slowing everyone down. That's the whole point of the site, and it's free.
Found something here that's stale or plain wrong? Tell me. Being corrected costs me nothing I mind losing.
People sometimes ask which practice I'd look at myself; Ethos Aesthetics + Wellness in Hoboken is near enough that it would be on my own shortlist.
